*** WE ARE NO LONGER TAKING REGISTRATIONS FOR THIS EVENT Incredibly, with the event up on our website for only seven hours, we have had over 300 people register for Fireside. At this point we are closing registration due to the maximum capacity of the alternative venue for the event (which we have booked in the case of wet weather). All those who have registered will be guaranteed access to the alternative venue. Five weeks out from the event we are just taking stock and any updates will appear here, so please do check back or follow us on Instagram of Facebook for more news. ***

Groundswell and Carn to Cove present FIRESIDE  by Nikki & JD / Lost Dog

Gather around the fire and let us remind you of what it was to be afraid of the dark... Don’t build the fire too high, sing too loud or laugh too heartily because he’s out there and he’s hungry.

The award-winning company Nikki & JD, in collaboration with Lost Dog, create an outdoor show that combines circus, dance, theatre, fire and live music to re-enact the original horror story. The one about the monster, and the monster’s mother, and the dragon and the hero and the severed limbs. Dark, comic and physically dangerous this is a modern re-telling of that ancient epic, Beowulf.

Don’t miss this exceptional outdoor show, brought to a stunning Newquay location by Groundswell, in partnership with Carn to Cove. With heartfelt thanks to Cornwall Council, along with Jenny Briant & Fistral Beach Surf School.

KEY INFORMATION FOR AUDIENCE MEMBERS

please read before joining us for Fireside

REGISTERING WITH US In line with Groundswell's commitment to activating and animating public space, this event is free to attend and we are not selling 'tickets'. However, we ask that you still register your attendance in advance. This allows us to keep in touch with you in case of bad weather bringing about a change of venue and also to ask you for feedback after the event (which is critical to enable future free performances of this nature to take place!) When registering for Fireside, there is also an option to make a donation towards our work. Groundswell is a non-profit, with an ambitious mission to offer a rich and exciting range of free events for the people of Newquay. In 2025 alone, we have delivered free workshops, children's shows, spoken word events holiday club places for children on pupil premium, as well as the recent LOOK OUT! Festival. With no core-funding, any donations are gratefully received to maintain this provision! LOCATION AND WHAT TO BRING

This event is outdoors, on a beach, at sundown, and is staged overlooking the North Atlantic. It is our hope that the setting will add to the enjoyment of Fireside, but please come prepared to ensure you are comfortable. We recommend wearing sturdy footwear, layers and a waterproof jacket. You are welcome to bring a camping chair, but to ensure a good view we actually recommend a blanket/groundsheet or waterproof cushion. In the event that poor weather means that Fireside cannot be performed at Fistral, we will contact you with details of a nearby indoor venue in good time.

ACCESS The performance site is on an open beach with no immediate hard-standing or path access. Please bear this in mind as you plan your attendance and note the following arrival arrangements for those with and without additional mobility needs. Once you register to attend, we will also include these in your confirmation email/reminder email so the information is handy at the time of the event.

IMPORTANT ARRIVAL ARRANGEMENTS Please make your way to the site at Fistral Beach by starting at Tower Road Car Park (click/tap for google pin location). Whether you are coming to the event by car (and therefore parking in this car park) or whether you are accessing the site by foot from nearby in Newquay, we are urging all audience members without mobility needs to start at this location in their approach to the site. From this starting point, you can then make your way across the golf course path, (click/tap for google map route) before ascending the dunes, as the performance site comes into view.

Arrival arrangements for those with additional mobility needs: To get to the performance site, audience members will need to cross a distance of 100m of sand from a starting point (where you can also park), situated at the southern end of Fistral Beach Car Park here (click/tap for google pin location). In the case of wheelchair users, Fistral Beach Surf School maintain two beach variants, which may be available to use but will need to be booked in advance on a first come and first served basis. Please contact them to do so on 01637 850 737. If you have any questions about accessing site, you are also welcome to call the Groundswell team on 01637 870 820.
