The Bishop's School, Treninnick Hill, Newquay TR7 2SR

The details...

Don't miss internationally recognised company, Justice in Motion, as they bring this incredible show to Newquay... for one day only!

CODE is a powerful, gritty production that delves into the hidden world of county lines and knife crime. Featuring a live rap score, and blending parkour, trial-bike stunts, physical theatre, gripping storytelling, and evocative visuals, CODE explores the complex realities faced by young people caught in cycles of exploitation and violence. Essential viewing for any young person, parent/carer and anyone in Newquay who cares about the impact of these issues in Cornwall... and anyone who enjoys seeing outstanding dynamic performance!

This thought-provoking performance shines a light on the human stories behind the headlines - reminding us that anyone, regardless of background, race, or gender, can be a victim or a perpetrator. It challenges perceptions and inspires vital conversations about resilience, choice, and hope in communities affected by these urgent social issues.

EVENT OVERVIEW:

Location: The Bishops' School

Date: Friday 10th October 2025

Start: 4.30pm

Running Time: 45mins

The show has been designed for all ages to be both visually compelling and entertaining, but also to deliver an important message. It is necessarily impactful and features scenes of knife crime and drugs. Recommended for age 10+ ... Though under 10s are welcome to come at the discretion of their adults/carers. The show doesn't place inside in a dark room/with lights, so if children need to take some time out and withdraw themselves with carers/adults, the full playground is available.

The show is FREE to attend!

but it is essential to register that you are coming!

Please also consider making a donation to support Groundswell in continuing to provide Newquay with these opportunities :)

CODE has been created in collaboration with official agencies working on the ground, and the show's main protagonist is played by a young actor aged 14. It is narrated by rapper, Still Shadey, with the lyrics by Sheffield-based rapper Marcus ‘Matic Mouth’ Smith. The lyrics are published in the digital programme which you can find here.

Groundswell is proud to have brought Justice in Motion to Newquay, and this is part of its ongoing commitment to ensure that the town gets access to high quality creative experiences, as well as drawing attention to Newquay from further afield in Cornwall. This is Justice in Motion's first visit to the duchy, and the team are stoked to be visiting specially to stage CODE for the schoolchildren and community of the town.

The show will be playing to all Year 5s/Year 6s across Kernow Learning schools at a non-public performance earlier in the day. Parents are welcome to book to come again for the 4.30pm show, and bring friends, family and older siblings!

This project would not be possible without the incredible support of Safer Stronger, Kernow Learning, WildWorks, Lydia Mills, Rachel Murray and Nathan Jackson. Thank you so much!

About Justice in Motion  In their own words...

We make theatre. A powerful, thought-provoking, visual type of theatre. We tell stories about people who are victims of social injustice. Our shows are exciting and engaging. They mix dance, theatre, parkour, aerial acrobatics, film and music. They captivate and draw you in as we shine a light into some of the dark places you can’t, normally, see. With academic, business and charity partners we find out as much as we can about the people whose stories we tell. We give silent sufferers a voice.

KEY INFO

FOR AUDIENCE MEMBERS

please read before joining us...

REGISTERING WITH US Whilst the event is not 'ticketed', we still ask that you register your attendance in advance. There is a capacity limit and this also allows us to keep in touch with you in case of bad weather bringing about a change of venue and also to ask you for feedback after the event (which is critical to enable future free performances of this nature to take place!) When registering for CODE, there is also an option to make a donation towards our work...

Groundswell is a non-profit organisation, with an ambitious mission to offer a rich and exciting range of free events for the people of Newquay. In 2025 alone, we have delivered free workshops, children's shows, spoken word events holiday club places for children on pupil premium, as well as the recent LOOK OUT! Festival. We are also bringing 'Fireside' to Fistral Beach on 24th October. With no core-funding, any donations are gratefully received to maintain this provision! LOCATION AND WHAT TO BRING

This event is outdoors and will only be moved to a back-up indoor venue in the case of significantly adverse weather. So please come prepared to ensure you are comfortable. The show is only 45 minutes but, depending on the forecast, we recommend dressing warm and bringing a waterproof jacket. Please note there is no seating provided. You are welcome to stand to watch, but we also suggest bringing a blanket/groundsheet or cushion. You are welcome to bring a camping chair, but there will be limited space for these; to guarantee a good view, it is preferable to bring something to put on the grounds to sit on. In the event that poor weather means that CODE cannot be performed outside, we will contact you with details of a nearby indoor venue in good time.

ACCESS The site is fully accessible, with toilets for wheelchair users. Blue badge holders are permitted to park in the school itself.

PARKING If coming by car (and unless you are a blue badge holder) please do not park inside the school. There are a good number of parking spaces outside the school, as well as plenty of street parking as you ascend Treninnick Hill from the double roundabout adjacent to Trenance Gardens.

If you wish to avoid time wasted trying to find parking, we recommend parking here in Trenance Long Stay Car Park (at the far corner as you drive in), walking over Treloggan railway crossing, and the The Bishops' School is only a seven minute walk via this route.
